Nuevo Fuego
Saturday night as the sun goes down a procession leaves the Oratorio. All participants are carrying candles.
This is a small, but very moving procession. The procession begins in twilight and ends in darkness.
The parade of mostly women, followed by faithful men, women, and children moves down the street and circles
back to the church. The life-sized statue Lady of our Sorrows with her flowing black cape is carried inside
the church.
Meanwhile outside the church, the nuevo fuego or new fire is lit. This is the source for lighting candles of
all those who will enter the church for the mass that follows. The candles light the interior of the church,
which has only one light turned on so the priest can read the liturgy.
