Exploding of the Judases
There are no parades or exhibitions of Easter finery on Pascua (Easter Sunday). However, there is the
exploding of the Judases in the Jardin, San Miguel’s main plaza.
At noon life-size paper mache figures are exploded and burned in effigy in front of City Hall. This is a
lively affair with bits of paper and “body parts” flying through the air after each explosion. Exploding
these figures that often resemble politicians and other public persons has evolved from a much older custom.
Originally this custom was brought from Spain by the missionaries to teach Indians the treason of Judas.
Some consider this a great opportunity to give vent to frustrations with public figures. |
