Photography in San Miguel de Allende is all about the light, historical colonial architecture, friendly people, flowers, cactus, and fiestas. Come to this city in the northern highlands of Mexico. Working with Jo Brenzo, you will learn and practice getting beyond just the beautiful, the cliché. Within the context of this special place and amid the camaraderie of the group, discover new ways to think about the images that you photograph.

The San Miguel de Allende photo workshop invites you to use the camera format and type of film of your choice. During the workshop you have access to the computer center and Photoshop 7 to edit your digital images, as well as use of the photo lab to develop film and print your black & white photographs. There are many one hour labs available for the processing of color print film.

There will be a field trip to Pozos, a nearby historic mining town. The "ghost town" structures that remain standing in the hills and the desert vegetation provide rich visual material for your photography.

All the skills you have learned and perfected will be put to use shooting the Dia de Locos, The Day of the Crazies, parade. This fiesta celebrating Saint Anthony is unique to San Miguel. The day begins with a mass at the church in Colonial San Antonio. Colorful costumes abound.

Over the next several hours, a long, boisterous parade of "crazies" winds through town. There are masks and costumes of political figures, clowns, ostriches—almost anything imaginable. There are men in dresses with masks and lots of padding. Everyone has candy to throw to the children and adults crowding the curbs. From past experience photographing this event, instructor, Jo Brenzo will recommend various considerations, to help you make the most of your day.

Sally Riewald will lead an optional writing workshop for those wishing to expand their "seeing" to include the written word. In this informal group you will be encouraged to write to discover your "own voice," just as you photograph to find your own personal style. In this relaxed environment of this workshop, you will write informally about your experiences during the week.
